My “new-new” books, bought with a lame excuse

As you may have noticed, I recently bought a lot of books.

Much much more than the ones I read.

So why did I buy more?

I participated in somuchreading.com Secret Santa and I had to buy a book for my “mate”. I will reveal which book I bought and what else I put in the package once I receive my own package from my Secret Santa! (well, hopefully I will receive something and I won’t get ignored!).

So using this lame excuse (I was not going to pay shipping for just one book!), I bought all these books that you see above.

By the way, the book I wanted to buy was almost 4 times more expensive if I bought it from the local bookstore than Amazon. And I would have to order it and I didn’t trust them at all, they would probably bring it late or not inform me that it arrived (has happened)

Anyway, these are the books:

1. The ones I saw in Over The Place

I think I have bought more than half of the books that Over the Place suggests!

• Vivian versus the Apocalypse: Vivian’s parents got “raptured” and she was left behind. She makes a road trip across a post-rapture America, together with some companions, in order to find out what happened.

• The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society: WWII England through the exchange of letters between a writer and an inhabitant of the island of Guernsey. Their topic was the island’s book club (Potato Peel Pie) and how it helped them get through the war. Based on that description, I would probably not have bought the book, but Over the Place really loved it, so I thought I should give it a try. I love WWII books anyway!

• Finding Audrey: a cute book about a teenage girl with anxiety disorder. Looks like a pleasant read. (but why did I buy it in hardcover? probably it was cheaper than the paperback, I don’t remember)

 

2. The one I saw in Cherrybookish’s blog

• Bird Box: Post-apocalyptic book about a woman and her two kids, in a world where vision can kill you (“One glimpse of it, and a person is driven to deadly violence”). I don’t want to read more, sounds promising! And cherrybookish’s review convinced me!

 

3. The one that a friend suggested

• The Rosie Project: University professor has problems dating, but finally decides to find the perfect woman for him. She should be “…punctual and logical—most definitely not a barmaid, a smoker, a drinker, or a late-arriver“. Rosie is all that. She is looking for her biological father and the professor can help her… anyway, I already wrote too much, I will read it (hopefully in 2016!) and let you know!

 

4. The serious ones

• Between the world and me: A new book, winner of the National Book Award for Non-Fiction. It is a letter from a father to his adolescent son, explaining racism to him.
• Drifting House: Short stories about Koreans
• Purple Hibiscus: Another book by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, again set in Nigeria.A brother and a sister are sent by their father to stay with their aunt. There they discover how different and nice life could be, away from the confines of their father’s authority.

 

5. The “uncategorized”

• Welcome to Night Vale: Night Vale is a small town where ghosts, angels, aliens, and government conspiracies are all parts of everyday life. It was originally a podcast and I still haven’t decided if I should read the book first or listen to the podcast…
• How to be both: Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. But we all do. And I had judged that one long time ago and rejected it. I mean, what is that cover? I assumed it is a “housewife” book. But then everyone started mentioning it and apparently it is written in an interesting way, so I thought I should give it a try.
• Carry on: I really didn’t expect it to be so big 😕 If you have read Fangirl you know what it is about: it is the story of Simon Snow, the one that Cath was basing her fanfiction. It is not often that you get to read books mentioned in other books you have read. But it is so big! 😕
